Comment on the interim report of the Independent Review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety

Published: 19/12/2017

The Engineering Council contributed to the cross-engineering sector response to the call for evidence for the Independent Review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety and supports the Royal Academy of Engineering’s response to the interim report.

As the UK regulatory body for the engineering profession, the Engineering Council sets and maintains internationally recognised standards of professional competence and ethics for Engineering Technicians (EngTech), Incorporated Engineers (IEng), Chartered Engineers (CEng) and Information and Communications Technology Technicians (ICTTech). This ensures that employers, government and wider society - both in the UK and overseas - can have confidence in the knowledge, experience and commitment of professionally registered engineers and technicians. Professional engineering registration is currently not mandatory in the UK, but is a means of demonstrating the competence and commitment of registered engineers and technicians, who commit to keeping their skills up to date.

We welcome the interim report’s recognition of the importance of competence and look forward to working with professionals across the construction sector to address the interim report’s recommendations.
