In May 2016 the Home Secretary wrote to the chair of the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) and commissioned it to examine whether there is a shortage of teachers or teachers in specific subjects which it would be sensible to fill through non-European Economic Area (EEA) migration. The MAC has issued a call for evidence in relation to this commission.

The letter highlights that secondary school teachers in mathematics, physics and chemistry are currently included on the shortage occupation list and that the Department for Education has suggested that teachers in Mandarin, computer science and design & technology might also warrant inclusion.

The MAC has been asked to consider all teaching subjects and look at evidence from sector bodies and stakeholders based in all parts of the UK. The Engineering Council encourages professional engineering institutions and Higher Education bodies to provide comment where appropriate. Evidence must be submitted by 16 September 2016.
