The Engineering Council is pleased to announce that Paul Bailey rejoined the organisation at the end of July as Deputy Chief Executive/Operations Director. Paul, who previously worked at the Engineering Council as a Senior Executive from 2004 to 2007, returns from the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS), where he has been Deputy CEO since 2008. 

In his new role, one of Paul’s key tasks will be to ensure that the Engineering Council’s business improvement programme continues to deliver efficiency and effectiveness to all areas of activity.  He will also be responsible for ensuring that a rigorous and supportive licensing operation is maintained for the Professional Engineering Institutions (PEIs).  

Jon Prichard, CEO of the Engineering Council says: “We are delighted that Paul has agreed to return to the Engineering Council in this role.  His experience of working with a wide range of stakeholders and his understanding of the professional engineering landscape will be invaluable as we work to meet our objectives.  The perspective that his recent PEI experience brings to the role will help to ensure that our regulatory activities continue to assure competence on behalf of society whilst also adding value for registrants.” 

Paul adds: “I’m pleased to be returning to the Engineering Council after a few years with the RAeS and I am looking forward to the challenge of helping the Engineering Council achieve its strategic objectives.  Additionally, I look forward to building on the successful work the Engineering Council has undertaken in recent years and to supporting the energetic and hard-working staff and volunteers in maintaining the good relations that they have with the PEIs and other partner organisations.” 

A Physics graduate from the University of Manchester, Paul is a member of both the RAeS and the Institute of Physics (IOP).  Having originally started work in the aerospace industry, since 1998 Paul has worked in various roles at the Engineering Council and the RAeS.   In his latest role as Deputy CEO at the RAeS his responsibilities included managing the institution’s governance, overseeing membership and professional standards activities and managing the institution’s learned and professional output, particularly in terms of its publications and technical output.
